A British medical student accused of beating up and firing a gun at his girlfriend when he visited her in the US has dismissed her claims as lies.

Tony Boyd, 23, was released on bail following his arrest in Waukesha, Wisconsin, for an alleged attack on Sophie Kelly.

Mr Boyd, from Troon in Scotland, says he only 'threw a few punches' when he discovered his girlfriend was 'having an affair', after walking in on Miss Kelly in the bedroom with a work colleague. However, the attack was directed at his love rival, not Miss Kelly, he claims.

He said the gun went off by accident when he emptied the contents of the other man's bag over the balcony.

Mr Boyd told MailOnline: 'It is hard to believe that this is happening. Me and her were going out for over a year - she lived with me for over a year.

'Her parents were in the US. She qualified as a vet at the start of this summer and got a job over there.

Aspiring doctor Tony Boyd, 23, (pictured right) of Troon, Ayrshire, was released on bail following his arrest in Waukesha, Wisconsin, for an alleged attack on Fife-born Sophie Kelly

'So I said to her that I'd go over there and help her settle in for two months. Two weeks prior to me leaving, one night I came home to the apartment to find her with another guy in her bedroom.

'She was having an affair. I threw a few punches at the guy. I chased him out of the apartment and she quickly followed.

'She is trying to press charges that I had physical contact with her but that completely didn't happen and there is no evidence for that. It was very obvious that I threw punches at the guy.'

Discussing the gun, he added: 'I saw the guy's bag beside the couch where I was sitting. I took his bag out to the porch out the back and started emptying it.

'There was a firearm so I pulled it out - I've never even held a gun before so originally I thought 'what's this?' - so as I pulled it out a bullet goes off into the distance in front of me. At this point there was nobody there apart from myself.

'There were no gun shots fired at anyone, there was no intention of firing gun shots at anyone. It was complete fluke accident. If anything the gun probably had more effect on me because I was completely shocked.

'I dropped the gun and ran out. The police turned up. I gave myself up and told them exactly what happened. I didn't lie.'

Court papers show Boyd is charged with one count of discharging a firearm, two charges of battery and a charge of criminal damage to a property on August 11.

He pleaded not guilty on August 14 and after paying an £11,000 bail fee he was allowed to return to the UK to continue his final year of study at the University of Glasgow.

The couple dated for several months and enjoyed luxury holidays to Thailand, Spain and Greece together, and Miss Kelly even modelled for Boyd's sportswear brand.

At a case hearing this week the court noted Boyd was not in attendance due to his studies in Scotland and another hearing was set for March next year.

He has been told he cannot drink alcohol or contact his ex-girlfriend while on bail.

His father Lewis, a restauranteur, added: 'Tony had gone to America where Sophie got a job as a vet.

'They got set up and he came home one night and she had someone in the bedroom with her.

'Obviously, emotions were running high. He kicked open the bedroom door of the apartment he and his girlfriend shared. He didn't touch her. I know that for a fact because I was over there in the States and bailed him out. I spoke to his attorney and the DA.

'He has been done with vandalism for breaking the door, assault for punching the guy and also discharging a firearm within 100 yards of a residential buillding.

'His attorney, a Mr Buchard, has said each charge carries a penalty of 30 days. 30 days for vandalism, 30 days for assault and 30 days for the firearm charge. The worst case scenario is 90 days.

'He was due in court on Monday, but the attorney got the trial postponed until June to allow him to finish his medical degree.'
